The PC I am trying to delete the files from is running Ubuntu 21.10. ![]() ![]() The reason I would like to do this without sudo, is I am trying to remove a bunch of different files while signed in as that user in Filezilla. In general I would recommend using the default file permissions. I type y and it says cannot remove filename: Permission denied. You can read our great guide on file permissions that I believe should explain the different options for changing folder permissions to allow you to upload. In general I would recommend using the (). You can read our () that I believe should explain the different options for changing folder permissions to allow you to upload. You will want to take a look at the folder your are uploading to and check the permissions. If that does not address what you are seeing, then it isn't a root permissions problem. Just to make sure, did you grant your limited user sudo permissions? With Ubuntu you would want to access the Linode as root then run the following command: ubuntu nginx sftp vps filezilla Share Improve this question Follow asked at 19:20 user3046831 not sure how reliable this would be, but a fast fix is to run sudo chmod -R 775 /usr/share/nginx/www/ Mohammad AbuShady at 20:50 That doesnt seem to be a very good idea, if you have a look at this link. I would greatly appreciate any assistance or insight into this. I've tried changing permissions but its not changing? I had no problem doing it as root - but I obviously don't want to leave root open, and change sshd setting everytime I want to upload. This only happens when trying to upload as a user. ![]() I am not sure if this is a chmod problem or a root access problem. It comes up with the following error, regardless of what file I upload:Įrror: /path/to/folder/index.php: open for write: permission denied When I try to upload a file from my desktop to the server. I logged into filezilla and successfully connected to my home directory, and also the public directory, and into each name-based virtual host directory. I have Unbuntu I followed the LAMP stack instructions. Thank you for putting up with this intermittent and apparently bizarre problem.I just went through the process of setting up my linode, as per the 'getting started', 'securing your server' and 'hosting a web site' help files in the linode library and I have encountered a problem. The cause is that if the parameter userlistenable in file /etc/vsftpd/nf is YES and the parameter userlistdeny default value is also YES. I'm still getting by, but occasionally get the urge to beat this dead horse some more. I can't see how this could possibly cause a problem, but might "instant" logins be associated with my SSD somehow? Like some sort of caching happening? (I don't believe in this association but I throw it out for you to trample.) Things worked fine on my old laptop but started failing with my new laptop which my son set up with an SSD. Something else has occurred to me (though this my be a red herring). When login is fast/instant file copying fails! If the login is sluggish, it almost always works! This seems really bizarre to me but it is very consistent! "Slow" is often accompanied with initial connection failure, timeout, then connection success. ![]() When I login to the server with WinSCP the login sometimes is very *fast* (almost instantaneous). However I've observed the following that seems to be consistent.
